IT’S officially uncharted territory for Camden & Islington “Candi” United after they reached the third round qualifying stage of the Women’s FA Cup for the first time.
They progressed in the prestigious competition courtesy of a 1-0 victory at Haddenham on Sunday, with match-winner Ivona Rousseva finding the back of the net with a late long-range shot.
Candi will now host Aylesford LFC on October 13 in a 2pm kick-off, and manager Joel Williams is hoping for a bumper crowd once a venue for the big game has been finalised.
He said: “This is the furthest the club has been in the FA Cup and is more proof that we’re moving in the right direction.
“We would love nothing more than to make it into the first round proper and would love as much support as possible to cheer us on in our attempt at doing that.”
Elsewhere, Camden Town WFC’s FA Cup dream was shattered on Sunday when they were beaten 3-2 by South London.
More than 100 fans were at the Maurice Rebak Stadium to get behind their respective teams. They saw the visitors carve out a 3-0 half-time lead.
But Camden Town put in a valiant second-half showing as they came within a whisker of salvaging the tie.
Maxine Borden’s cross found Maria Paz Vera at the far post who fired home with a first-time finish, before Jordyn Galway pulled another goal back from the penalty spot.
