Ukraine & what Labour thinks

Thursday, 23rd March 2023

• OLIVER Lewis wrote about Ukraine as the chair of the Holborn & St Pancras Labour Party and his views were endorsed by the party at its general committee meeting, (Democratic order is at stake, March 9).

Of course, there are probably some members who – like Simon Pearson – take a different view but they do not speak for Labour, (Another view of the conflict, March 16).

There is at least one issue that Simon Pearson gets wrong: no agreement was reached with Mikhail Gorbachev concerning the expansion of NATO.

If it had been, such an important question would have been included in a treaty. If Simon Pearson can point to any treaty which includes this, I would be interested to hear which it is.

The main international obligation that applies to Russia, as it applies to all states, is the United Nations charter, which guarantees the sovereignty of member states. It is this that was violated by Vladimir Putin’s invasion.
