Ukip’s backing raises questions for the Conservative candidate

• VOTERS in Hampstead & Kilburn deserve to hear from the Conservative candidate regarding the endorsement she has received from Paul Nuttall’s Ukip.

Ukip’s decision to stand aside may not have been the Tory candidate’s personal choice, but I’m sure the 1,500 or so Ukip voters from 2015 will wish to know whether she agrees with them on such vital issues as “whether Britain should ban the burqa”, and whether we should be moving the NHS towards “an insurance-based system” as the Ukip leader has previously argued.

Given that the Conservative candidate’s election materials repeat the scaremongering claims of a “coalition of chaos” under a potential Labour government, it would be particularly welcome to hear on how she intends to represent her Ukip constituents’ views on Brexit.

Will she agree with them that Hampstead & Kilburn’s economy would be better off under World Trade Organisation rules? Will she agree that the thousands of EU nationals in the seat are better off packing their bags for their imminent departure?

Seventy-five per cent here voted to remain in the EU. It is true that many have moved on, and accepted we are leaving. But as far as I’m aware, the overwhelming majority would not want to trash our local economy, nor would they want to be shipping their European neighbours back to the continent.

Until the Conservative candidate distances herself from this endorsement, it is high time that voters ask what she truly stands for.
