IT was devastating to wake up on Tuesday to the news of another fatal fire in London. To reiterate my message from the early hours of the morning, my thoughts are with the family of the victim of the Daleham Gardens tragedy, and my thanks go out to all those firefighters who worked tirelessly through the night.

As MP for the area, my priority is to ensure that all those affected, especially the other residents of Daleham Gardens, are being listened to and looked after following this traumatic event. At the time of writing the cause of the fire is under investigation, but I want to pay tribute to Camden Council for the immediate steps it has taken to offer assistance.

Residents should contact my office if they feel I can offer any additional support. Following the unspeakable tragedy at Grenfell Tower, the sight of a charred residential block prompts an immediate sense of anguish, but also a race for reflection on what could have been done differently.

I am keen to stress the investigation is still ongoing, and to repeat the comments from the London Fire Brigade director, who was clear the first two engines arrived within the six-minute target time. However, it is impossible to ignore that this tragic incident happened a 30-second drive from the very Belsize fire station that was closed in 2014.

The New Journal has led the way in investigating the consequences of cuts to fire services in recent years, and one can’t help but feel that the limitations on resources are having an impact. I have spoken to far too many residents and indeed firefighters who believe otherwise.

The Thin Red Line investigation must remain firmly on the public’s agenda as the annual inspection of the country’s finances takes place. The government must make sure that our fire services are properly resourced to protect us in the quickest possible time – and I will continue to make sure they do their job.
