Trouble with the Ferris wheel idea

Artist’s impression of how the Ferris wheel could look
• THANK you to Vicky Richardson for explaining the inappropriateness of LabTech’s proposal for a Ferris wheel in the West Yard at Camden Lock, (Lock ‘theme park’ plans are wrong, Forum, October 13).
Vicky Richardson is a respected writer on the built environment, and she concludes that the “idea is shocking in its disregard for the quality of the place, its history and architecture”.
Sadly it has long been plain that LabTech’s interventions in Camden Market are driven by maximising their profit rather than the interests of residents or market traders.
The Hawley Wharf development has replaced an area of vitality with commercial dullness, which desperate attempts to woo tourists cannot overcome.
The Ferris wheel is another attempt. As Vicky Richardson suggests, it is a ploy to increase the value of the market prior to sale.
