ANYONE who thought the day of the underdog was gone should check out the latest exploits of triple champions Brian Presley, Derek Mennell and Richard Caylor from Parliament Hill Bowling Club.

The trio didn’t let a little thing like playing the reigning champions and favourites – Paddington – in the final of the Finchley and District Men’s Triple Championships faze them. Not only did they win the final, but they dished out a bowls masterclass as they recorded a stonking 25-3 points victory at Etchingham Park.

It was a tremendous feat for Parliament Hill, who have won 11 of their 16 matches this year despite only having 19 members – compared with their rivals, who boast around four times as many seasoned competitors.

The newly-crowned district champions also scooped silverware at their home green in Highgate Road over the weekend as they all won honours in Parliament Hill’s internal club competition. Richard retained the Seven-Up Cup and won the Gent’s Championship, while Derek captured the President vs Captain Cup.

Brian teamed up with Ann Taylor to win the mixed pairs event, and also won the 100-Up Cup. But his most risky victory came in the Hill Cup, where he bagged the trophy and the bragging rights by beating wife Sheila in the final.

Sheila wouldn’t have been too disappointed, however, as she was also among the winners after clinching the Ladies Championship.

Parliament Hill Bowling Club are looking for new members.

Anyone interested should call Derek on 020 8441 0013 or email paul.mennell@btinternet.com for details.
