Train drivers hope for support from their own Labour MPs

Train drivers will strike for one day on July 30
• MEMBERS of the train drivers’ union ASLEF at Arriva Rail London (London Overground) have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action and action short of a strike, as they seek to achieve an appropriate cost of living pay rise.
In an unprecedented number just under 99 per cent of drivers voted “yes” with a turnout of 92.5 per cent, which is considerably above the thresholds imposed on trade unions under Tory legislation from 2016.
The current Conservative government has chosen to play politics with the funding of Transport for London, which pays Arriva to run the London Overground on a concession basis.
This is now having a direct impact on those front-line workers who consistently kept trains running throughout the pandemic and have achieved consistently high levels of performance.
Drivers will strike for one day on July 30 and, given the footprint the Overground Network has in Camden, this is likely to bring significant disruption.
Though unfortunate, such action is unavoidable in order to defend the living standards of skilled and committed workers amid a cost-of-living crisis with a central government that refuses to give proper funding to public transport.
We trust we can rely on the support of both the MPs for Hampstead and Kilburn and Holborn and St Pancras!
