Versatile Madison Brown was among Camden Town WFC’s summer signings who impressed in their FA Cup win away to Cray Wanderers [Sophia Demetriades]

WOMEN’S FA Cup fever gripped the capital and beyond on Sunday when teams battled it out for a place in the Second Round Qualifying.

Among the clubs very much still in the mix is Camden Town WFC, who continued their winning run on the road with a resounding victory over Cray Wanderers.

Strikes from Maya Brueckner and Sanaa Williams, along with an own-goal, did all the damage at Flamingo Park in Chislehurst as Camden sealed a 3-0 triumph, setting up another away day in the famous old competition next weekend, this time against Ebbsfleet United, who play alongside Town in Division One North of the London & South East Regional League.

On Sunday, the visitors were handed an excellent opportunity to take the lead on the half-hour mark when Maria Paz Vera was brought down inside the penalty area.

Kelly Faye stepped up from the spot, but Cray goalkeeper Daisy Jarrett guessed correctly and produced a good save to keep the scores level.

Town refused to allow the missed opportunity to disrupt their momentum, however, and finally made the breakthrough just before the break.

Winger Brueckner, who only relocated to the UK from Australia this summer, continued her impressive start to life in Camden colours as she produced a fine finish to make it 1-0.

After adding the goal to the one that she scored against Oxted in the Preliminary Round, the 23-year-old, who now lives in Islington, said: “There’s something really special about playing in the FA Cup.

“You grow up knowing the history of this competition and what it means to football in England, so to be here playing in it, and to score in both of my first two FA Cup games, is an amazing feeling.

“Hopefully there are plenty more FA Cup memories still to come.”

Town picked up where they left off after the interval and doubled their advantage on 56 minutes. Centre-back Williams once again displayed her dominance at both ends of the pitch as she struck from close range to score what is already her fourth goal of the season.

Substitute Ice Kamara then appeared to have added a spectacular third with a wonderful long-range effort, only for the goal to eventually be ruled out for offside following an intervention from the assistant referee.

Camden Town haven’t conceded a goal yet this season, but that run was put at risk in the 75th minute when Cray were awarded a penalty after keeper Tamsin Wickens was adjudged to have fouled the home striker.

Darren Smith’s side were relieved to cling on to their clean sheet, though, as Ellie Rivers fired her spot kick wide.

Town wrapped up their impressive 3-0 win in the 88th minute when Faye delivered a dangerous corner into the area that was turned into her own net by Jarrett.

The victory marked another important step for Camden-born midfielder Maxine Borden, who is continuing to rediscover her best form following a knee injury.

After getting more crucial minutes under her belt, Borden said: “The FA Cup is always special, and as someone from Camden, representing this club in this great competition means a lot to me.

“I’m still working my way back after injury and I know there’s another level I can get to personally, but every game I feel stronger and more like myself again.

“What matters most is the team. We’ve started the season really well; there’s so much quality throughout this squad and I’m enjoying being back out there contributing. We want to see how far we can take this.”
