Too many cyclists break the law

‘Cyclists ignore both safety and the law by cycling on pavements and cycling across red lights’
• I AM a Camden resident, pedestrian, cyclist and car driver and I frequently travel across the borough and surrounding boroughs.
I am very supportive of the work Camden Council and other councils are doing to improve the safety of roads for cyclists and pedestrians.
However, I have a general comment which I think needs attention if we are to be successful in transforming our city.
One reason for the continuing tension between residents / pedestrians and cyclists is that so many cyclists ignore both safety and the law by cycling on pavements and cycling across red lights.
As a cyclist myself I feel very angry with fellow cyclists who do this, as it gives us all a bad name. It puts pedestrians, particularly vulnerable people, at risk.
It also puts the cyclists themselves at risk, and, as a car driver, I am often concerned that I may hit a cyclist who is ignoring the lights.
I would urge a Camden-wide, and preferably London-wide, campaign to inform and remind cyclists that they are required to follow the Highway Code. And that it is against the law to cycle on the pavement and to ignore traffic lights.
This should be promoted on billboards on pavements, through cycle shops and cycle hire organisations, and food delivery organisations and there should be action by the local authorities and or the police to monitor this.
The Department for Transport has completely failed to provide a public information campaign on the revised Highway Code; in its absence perhaps local authorities can fill the gap.
