Too feeble on fly-tipping

Friday, 11th February 2022

• I HAVE been astonished to see how feeble Camden’s Liberal Democrats and Conservatives are on the issue of fly-tipping.

I watched the recent full council meeting and listened as the Lib Dem leader excused the dumping of waste, as those doing it felt “confused”.

In fact it is everybody’s responsibility to take care over how they get rid of their refuse.

The Lib Dems also failed to welcome the council’s introduction of a new targeted enforcement team who will be patrolling the streets to tackle this issue as well as fining people who drop litter.

If anyone is not sure of what to do, such as people newly moved into the borough, they should find out or arrange a collection.

The council has an excellent and easily accessible and informative website with all relevant information available.

Even worse, one of the Conservative candidates for the May elections tweeted that he “would not blame anyone who fly-tips”.

We know Boris Johnson has a hard time understanding the rules but that is no excuse for those representing Camden residents.

It is not a little bit ironic that both parties are weak on this, given the scale of cuts kicked off by the Lib Dem / Conservative Coalition government, which has impacted across the council.

It is right that Camden is deploying a new enforcement team to deal with the problem.

This will reinforce the Love Clean Streets app, which I have found gets dumped mattresses and the like cleared very quickly.
