To call dog walkers professionals is a misuse of the word

• NATALIE Scott does not seem to understand the reason for the introduction of limits to the number of dog walkers and their dogs permitted on Hampstead Heath, (Flawed new rules planned for professional dog walkers, December 31).
The decision was taken after numerous complaints over a long period from the public and pressure from the Heath & Hampstead Society responding to the same.
She does not appreciate that those of timid disposition, the elderly, or those who simply do not like dogs can be frightened or upset by seeing whole hordes of them approaching, especially as the dog walkers seem to gather in clans.
It may be socialising for them but it is upsetting for those who are simply taking their own dog for a walk when excitable animals meet up and can get out of control.
The City of London Corporation have simply responded to excessive numbers of animals being walked, and the resultant mayhem caused when they meet up, especially when some are of the vicious breeds known to attack people or children whether with the walkers or singly.
Hampstead streets seem to be full of people walking their dogs every day, in much greater numbers than previously and this is reflected on the Heath. It may be an easy way of earning money in the present circumstances but the numbers were rapidly getting out of control.
And to call dog walkers professionals is a misuse of the word and insulting to those who have spent many years of study or research to gain their qualifications or diplomas.
There is concern and worry about nuisance and anxiety that can be caused by dozens of dogs running around, whether free or under some sort of control.
This is apart from the mess caused when owners fail to pick up after their dogs, another unpleasant task for the Heath staff. I fully support the City of London Corporation’s decision.
