Time for reparations for the descendants of slavery?
Thursday, 11th June 2020
• FOLLOWING the horrendous killing of George Floyd, it is a criminal shame that “the voice of the unheard” (Martin Luther King Jr) has been hijacked by yet more violence and – in the US – eight more murders, many injured, horses included; all undermining the righteous purpose of the protest.
Black Lives Matter’s demand to defund the police cannot be the best way forward.
A loud and genuine apology from the police department and commitment to reform, would go a long way to help defuse the situation, and some kind of major reconciliation / conflict resolution process entered into.
Perhaps a big part of the solution would be to finally make the overdue financial reparation to the descendants of slavery, continuously called for but thus far denied.
