This scheme would see dangerous speeding by cyclists

• NICK Harding’s letter protesting at the Living Streets organisation’s support for a scheme providing left-turning cyclists with a short-cut across the pavement from Haverstock Hill to Prince of Wales Road, needs one extra bit of information to tell the full horror story, (Let’s get the cyclist pedestrian arguments clear, October 18).
This left turn is on one of the steepest downhill sections of Haverstock Hill, where cyclists can reach speeds sometimes faster than the speed limit. I know this because I live nearby and can see them.
With the proposed scheme, left-turning cyclists will be able to speed up even more because they will never have to stop at the Prince of Wales Road traffic lights, even when other traffic is slowing down or stationary, but can always just hurtle onto the pavement and shoot round the corner.
This will be extremely dangerous for all pedestrians, who mistakenly think they are safe in their own domain, but in particular for those with slow reactions, poor sight, or limited hearing. If Living Streets want to support this scheme, they should change their name to “Killer Pavements”.
