This O2 Centre plan will be the death of the area

• I AM very concerned about the proposed O2 development.

Anyone living in West Hampstead knows that the pavements of West End Lane are dangerously overcrowded (even worse now with the Travis Perkins development).

With an extra 4,000 plus extra people, I can’t bear to imagine how dreadful it will be.

Landsec have promised 35 per cent “affordable” homes; affordable to whom?

They clearly will not be homes for those in the health, care, education, fire safety sectors. I wonder if they will be sold mainly to investors.

And will Landsec keep to their promises? The Avenue Road developers are now quite far down the track, holding Camden Council to ransom, claiming they can no longer afford to provide “affordable” dwellings.

It seems some developers can just renege on commitments.

Will Camden really permit a development that brings at least 4,000 more people to a small area, with over-subscribed GP practices, overcrowded transport services, and dangerously crowded pavements?

The original plan for 900 dwellings in what is currently the car park was, in my view, far more acceptable.

How can Landsec tear down perfectly suitable buildings (with all the ecological consequences) in a time of climate crisis?

The large Sainsbury’s is used by many residents, who do not want another mini-supermarket in its place.

This development will signify the death of West Hampstead, an area which has become very desirable with its Victorian terraces and welcoming high street. Is the council really ready to accept that?
