This dark area has become a muggers’ paradise
Thursday, 1st September 2022
• TWO weeks ago, on a warm Saturday evening, I came out of Belsize Park tube station with my son. It was getting dark and as we were walking up towards Haverstock Hill we noticed two bike riders with masks over their faces.
We immediately hid our phones. I knew straight away they were going to try to rob someone. There were two lone women in front.
They passed us and mounted the pavement went past the two women – obviously lucky for them they never had their phone out.
I am really concerned about the lack of street lighting around there. It’s very poorly lit, hardly anyone around, and a muggers’ paradise and, of course, with no police about obviously these bandits are targeting travellers especially women for their phones.
I come out and travel late at night around Belsize Park. Why don’t the local police and council at least do something about the street lights around Haverstock Hill?
It’s dangerous and unfair especially for women at night commuting from Belsize Park which is obviously being targeted because it’s a dimly-lit and quiet, a wealthy area.
I tried calling the non-emergency number when I got home but gave up as the police were too busy!
