This cycle lane idea is misguided

‘BBC weather reports showing there is ‘low pollution’ in the air’
• THE plan to build bike lanes both up, and down Haverstock Hill is misguided and surely an example of bad faith.
Shop owners are said to fear “it could cost them their livelihoods” but they are to be given a chance to point this out one year after the work is completed.
And I do not suppose that Cllr Adam Harrison would like to have been put in such a position if he was serving the retail public and driven out of his business.
I am a regular cyclist, including use of the hill, and I do not feel any need to be provided with a segregated pathway.
The notion offered by the Camden Cyclists pressure group that “thousands of people… [will be able to] cycle up and down the hill at their own pace” is surely pie in the sky.
Bear in mind that the downhill will soon come to be dominated by high-speed two-wheelers, surely something of which pedestrians will have to be wary.
Cllr Harrison says the build will contribute to “zero casualties on our roads”, but the short interview report sadly lacks any evidence on what is the current casualty rate on this stretch of road.
He also wants to “slash air pollution”, but this is again short of a “base line comparison”, which is presumably what the daily BBC weather reports publish, with a green diamond indicating there is already “low pollution” in the air.
It is to be hoped that Cllr Oliver Cooper can return to the fray and redirect Camden Council’s finances (which we are forever being told are severely challenged by cuts) to more immediate and useful projects.
