Think again on the community garden
Thursday, 12th September 2019
• AS residents of 6-60 Bassett Street and supporters of the Community Gardening Club we are disappointed by the apparent intransigence of the council about its future, (Defiant gardeners ‘won’t be uprooted’, September 5).
The gardening club is multi-racial and inclusive and provides learning opportunities to children from Rhyl Primary School and Woodentots Nursery.
The beneficiaries of the community garden far outnumber the 28 tenants and residents of 6-60 Bassett Street, and we know that, like us, many of them either have plots or support the gardening club continuing as it is.
We are sure that Cllr Meric Apak would agree that the future of the club should be determined by firm and reliable evidence.
We believe the consultation carried out on behalf of Camden Council is flawed and he doesn’t accept as accurate the petition the club carried out among the 28 tenants and residents. Seemingly an impasse.
A meeting of the TRA has been requested and Cllr Apak has agreed to meet and to mediate between the two sides but neither of these things has happened.
So in order to move forward we offer Cllr Apak a “Brexitesk” challenge. He should agree to extend the deadline beyond the end of September to carry out a new consultation with questions mutually agreed.
The consultation has to be open and transparent. So that the 28 tenants and residents are fully informed, a meeting should be held prior to the consultation taking place and Cllr Apak should attend.
We believe the Community Gardening Club is exactly the kind of community initiative the Council should support we therefore call upon Cllr Apak to agree to our sensible proposal.
Finally we would like to extend a warm invitation to Cllr Apak to attend our community party so that he can meet us and see the garden for himself.
