There’s a long way to go to make our roads safe
Thursday, 19th August 2021
• I WAS horrified to see that four local councillors have “called in” the proposed new pedestrian crossings and safe cycling lanes proposed for the north of the borough, in Belsize Park.
A call-in is a way for councillors to do things like stop the introduction of safety measures such as this.
Recent fatal and serious collisions have reminded us of the long way there is still to go to make our roads completely safe.
Here in Holborn we need safety improvements to be coming forward as quickly as possible. We are encouraging healthier living and more sustainable transport and we have a duty to make these methods safe.
I am relieved that the council is planning to roll out such changes in other parts of Camden and so I cannot understand why elected councillors would try to stop them.
If any one of councillors Gio Spinella, Andrew Parkinson, Steve Adams, or Oliver Cooper withdrew their name from this call-in, would the safety measures be able to proceed?
I would like to request that the councillors to do the right thing and give up on this action, which makes little sense to me and is wrong. Why would anyone want to stop the introduction of pedestrian and cycling safety?
