There was no ‘skirmish’ on Super Saturday
Thursday, 28th November 2019

• WE are campaigners pictured in the report (Skirmishes on Super Saturday as Lib Dem leader and the Mayor of London hit front line of election battle, November 21) – there was no skirmish.
One Lib Dem yelled false accusations of anti-Semitism at Labour members and supporters, including those of us who are Jewish. We were appalled.
We agree with the Question Time audience member who said to Jo Swinson “Jeremy Corbyn has been fighting anti-Semitism and racism in all its forms since before you were born, and you have some brass neck to stand up there and call him an anti-Semite”.
We did, as you say, “blame” Swinson “for the rise in food bank use and austerity policies first enacted by the Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government”, of which she was an integral part.
We did chant: “Don’t vote Swinson, Don’t vote fracking”. And we did have a non-skirmish conversation with a Lib Dem supporter who was unaware that Swinson was funded by frackers.
The Lib Dems’ new policy to plant 60 million trees would offset the UK’s recent annual net emissions by less than 0.5 per cent. It cannot make up for the dangerous and polluting fracking industry.
Swinson voted against: an 18-month fracking ban; a review of the fracking industry’s environmental, health and social effects; requiring frackers to apply for environmental permits; setting CO2 targets; and closing a loophole in the emissions standards of oil, gas and coal-fired power stations. Swinson says she is anti-fracking – some brass neck.
The Lib Dems’ support for Tory austerity and student fees was not a “mistake” but a calculated betrayal driven by ambition – anything to be in government, much as Boris Johnson himself.
This time, a Lib Dem-Tory coalition would lead to a “Trump alliance”, a US corporate take-over of the NHS (and much else); and the undermining of action on climate change. This is what the trees are planted to camouflage.
