• IT is bad enough with social media turning every mundane exchange into some sort of knockabout spectacle, but now, it seems, every location has to become a tourist hub so that people will continue to go shopping, (Artist David Gentleman joins objectors to Ferris wheel at Camden Lock, May 4).

I’m no philosopher, but surely there must be more to life than shopping! Have we really got to have an unsightly big wheel blotting our landscape in our desperation to keep the wheels of commerce turning?

I shop, therefore I am, as René Descartes didn’t say.

How long before we are told that the HS2 plans are being modified yet again to incorporate a giant big dipper from Euston to Old Oak Common?
