There is support available for those affected by dementia
Thursday, 16th May 2019
• IN reply to the letter (We must have better facilities for people with dementia, May 9) we write to highlight the many services available to older people who live with dementia and memory impairment, and our commitment to making Camden a dementia-friendly borough.
We are sorry that the reader was unable to find substantial information about dementia services available in the borough. The good news is that there are many specialist support services in Camden for people with living with dementia and their carers.
You can call Age UK Camden’s Dementia Wellbeing service on 020 7239 0400 or Camden Carers Dementia Co-ordinator on 020 7428 8950 for information. We can then refer to our own dementia support services or help to identify others in Camden that are either specialist or dementia-friendly.
The dementia café mentioned in the letter has moved to Ingestre Road Community Centre (along with other groups from Highgate Newtown Community Centre) and is open from 10am to 3pm every Tuesday to people who live with dementia and their carers.
We are proud that a huge range of businesses, charities, the local authority and health services in the borough are members of the Dementia Action Alliance who work together to enable people in Camden can live well with dementia.
Some dementia services in Camden have also been recognised nationally as outstanding; such as those at the Royal Free Hospital, and offer innovative support to ensure older people living with dementia can lead full and rich lives.
With Dementia Awareness Week just around the corner (May 20-24) we are pleased to be launching a short film created by the dementia peer support and campaigning group The Great Camden Minds.
They aim to empower people living with dementia and make their voices heard on issues that affect them – showing us all the positive impact people can have in spite of a diagnosis of dementia.
