Branch Hill Care Home

• IS one suppose to feel sorry for the residents of Branch Hill estate who are faced by road works (‘We’ll chain ourselves to the railings’, May 4)?

The council is at last selling off the crumbling Branch Hill Care Home and resurfacing the road to improve access. These residents will, in the long run, benefit from this.

They stress they are council tenants but from the list of occupations one feels a bit mystified, as one was always given to understand that the original aim of council housing was to provide homes for the needy.

Councils need to look at their housing policies. There are poor people out there who are having to rent in the private sector at exorbitant rates because there are no council houses for them.
