Terry Ellis

• I WAS very pleased to read the article with Terry Ellis, (‘I spent 16 years in prison and I have to tell you: Therapy works’, June 11).

Years ago I spent four years visiting Grendon prison. It was then very high security. I was very impressed with the level-headed humanity which inmates experienced. I am sad its enlightened influence hasn’t spread.

In no way could it be described as an easy option but I saw then change and personal growth in people, both inmates and staff, and those I have encountered since do not lead me to believe the regime is any the less successful.

There are many characters and staff I remember from that time. I wish Terry Ellis well. I’ll definitely buy his book.
