James Roose-Evans

• THE name of James Roose-Evans brings back good memories, (The not-so-secret diary of James Roose-Evans, aged 90, Review, November 7).

The white bicycle on the roof of the old Hampstead Theatre, an idea from Amsterdam, I believe, symbolising freedom of spirit and creation.

I remember James Roose-Evans as artistic director of the Hampstead Theatre back in the late 1960s.

I was part of a production team for the now defunct Camden Group Theatre putting on a play. He was there, welcoming my wife and I, with his dachshund following him closely.
