The viability of the whole O2 Centre site project is questionable

Thursday, 6th April 2023

• MARCIA Macleod is quite correct in her prediction of the fate of the O2 Centre, (Minds made up on Landsec deal, March 30).

Camden’s planning committee did, indeed, rubber-stamp the officers’ recommendation on Thursday to approve the O2 Centre site redevelopment with only three out of the 10 councillors present voting against.

However, it is conditional on the approval of the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, as well as on certain section 106 agreements. The mayor can “call in” Camden’s decision and judge the application all over again himself. This happens rarely.

More often his team will look at the decision and judge it against the guidance given by the GLA. If there are issues which do not align with the London Plan, which is likely, we can comment on them via the mayor’s planning portal.

However, this will not happen for a while as it takes several weeks for Camden’s approval to reach the GLA, and then for them to post it on the planning portal.

Should Sadiq Khan or his team give their approval, there is still a lot that can go wrong to delay or halt the project, just like the disaster at 100 Avenue Road. The viability of the whole project is highly questionable. We must keep fighting on!
