The US supreme court’s decision on abortion is down to ‘democracy’

Friday, 15th July 2022

• I READ with interest about councillors condemning the US Supreme Court ruling on abortion. The reporting in your newspaper is, however, misleading.

Having read the majority decision, I can say that what the justices were affirming was that the issue of abortion – whether you are pro or con – cannot be “pulled out of” the 200-year-old document of the Constitution of the United States.

Even Ruth Bader Ginsburg would (have) agreed with the reasoning (had she remained alive).

Her arguments for abortion were more nuanced. However: she thought the decision (Roe v Wade) was flawed.

What the court has done is to kick the issue back to the 50 states, like they did with capital punishment.

It’s called democracy. Like 2016.

Still, the parliamentary version has much to say for itself.

Sorry Boris Johnson.
