The tide may be turning on Brexit

• BY luck you are publishing on March 29, a day that marks exactly one year until the UK leaves the European Union – leaves, that is, unless enough people ensure their voices are heard loud enough by the politicians.

Sir Keir Starmer, the MP for most of Camden where three out of four voters rejected Brexit and who is also Labour’s spokesperson on Brexit, has made it clear that he will respect the will of the people unless and until the people make clear they have changed their minds.

Having stood at stalls at various locations across Camden with fellow volunteers, I am getting the feeling that the tide is turning.

People who were indifferent, mildly pro-Leave, or just did not vote in 2016, are saying that they are now worried by Brexit, that they see it as likely to hurt their pockets, and that the claims made during the campaign were not true (70 million Turks coming to the UK, £350million a week for the NHS, trade deals signed before Brexit Day, etc, etc).

They are right to be worried. There is not enough space to list all the ways we will lose out but here are three: mobile charges for roaming in Europe; loss of rights to work in Europe; higher shop prices thanks to tariffs.

If everyone who is having second thoughts about Brexit wrote, rang or emailed their MP today, March 29 2018, that might just prevent a disastrous Brexit on March 29 2019.
