The so-called regeneration programme here is a disaster

• COUNCILLOR Danny Beales is quoted reiterating the council’s policy to build homes for sale to pay for council housing.

In Gospel Oak policy it may be, practice it is not.

Compared with 2013 there are currently about 30 council rent houses less and an equal number of small workshops demolished. Budget over-runs, long delays and gross incompetence are everywhere.

Bacton Low Rise (BLR) should have been finished four years ago. The tenants promised to be able to return still cannot see even a start to the work.

Yet there are now ambitious regeneration “plans” for demolishing two other very large local estates. Will they suffer the same fate as BLR?

Other small sites on Grafton Road which were small gardens, lovingly tended by residents, remain boarded up – for over four years.

Meanwhile hordes of consultants are employed to “consult” residents about lay-outs and community facilities. What have we got to show for all of this costly consultation?

Jam yesterday, jam tomorrow, but never jam today.

The latest published “vision” for our area will, like the many before it over the last 25 years, probably be a mirage. The so-called “regeneration programme” is a disaster for most of us who live and work in Gospel Oak.

Those responsible should be held to account.
