The Royal parks and police have my appreciation for closing Primrose Hill

Thursday, 15th July 2021

• SOME who oppose closing Primrose Hill for public safety are openly challenging and questioning the validity of people who have been harmed over the past year.

There have been personal attacks on the Community Facebook page as well as the Nextdoor neighbourhood app. Arguing on this issue has pitched neighbour against neighbour.

The article (‘There’s no need to lock up the park – it’s not the warzone you’ve read about’, CNJ, July 8) appears to cast doubt on the real and genuine suffering of many people.

I know of a letter to Sir Keir Starmer, signed by hundreds of people affected by various aspects of the 24-hour open park at Primrose Hill.

Serious harm has been caused to many residents who are now glad that the Royal Parks have taken action to prevent further late-night abuse of this beautiful park.

Residents in the sheltered housing, council housing, and private housing, have been reporting their concerns to councillors and police for months. They are not a “select few”.

I work for a charity and know many local people and businesses who have been very adversely affected by the late-night noise that was happening on fine evenings.

It has stopped now largely due to the very welcome 10pm closures that are being established on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

When the warmer weather returns and the pandemic restrictions ease, there will be large gatherings that will be peaceful and joyful. These will have to stop at some point in the evening so that they don’t go on all night.

The Royal Parks and the police have my appreciation for closing the park at night, as nearly all parks do, in order to stem late-night noise and nuisance.
