Keir Starmer

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer

• PHILIP Kemp’s open letter to Sir Keir Starmer was provocative but to my mind unrealistic, (Forum: Suggestions for Labour’s manifesto, January 4).

I support his proposals on land tax and possibly drug legislation, although I doubt Sir Keir would support either; but his view on immigration is ridiculous.

Morally justified, yes, but presupposing this was implemented I would like to know how he suggests they be housed. There are already thousands of homeless and others unable to afford to get on the property ladder. There are simply not enough council or affordable homes being built.

This would be one of the most popular moves Sir Keir should propose, to facilitate affordable and council homes being built as soon as possible. The post-war Clement Attlee government managed it and there were a lot less homeless people then.

Now the need is desperate and that would get him thousands of votes, together with my own desire to see nationalising all three public utilities, gas, water and electricity, especially after some of the horror stories about Thames Water and ludicrous profits made by the others.

Sadly he seems unable to commit himself to any of these and I agree with Philip Kemp, I am increasingly frustrated by his lack of commitment or reply to anything positive despite letters to him direct and via Tulip Siddiq MP; just a deafening silence.

Labour may have a large popular lead in the polls, but it could so easily be thrown away unless he comes up with some positive proposals soon.
