‘The secret to having a ‘real debate’ is to deal with the specific points raised by those who disagree with your position’

• IT was interesting to read the lengthy letter by Martin Plaut, (Main parties are already coalitions, June 23).

I am all in favour of the “real debate” continuing, but it is useful to focus on the issues under consideration.

Nowhere in that letter was any objection raised to the STV, single transferable vote, proposal mentioned in the earlier correspondence.

It is not a perfect answer by any means, but that is the main area where there appears to be general agreement as being a useful step in the direction of a more meaningful democracy. It is not “some mythical, undefined, future”.

Can we please focus on getting that implemented without having to indulge in too many unhelpful digressions?

The secret to having a “real debate” is to deal with the specific points raised by those who disagree with your position.
