The planning decision on Somers Town tower was wrong – they’re wrecking our borough

• WHAT can we do to stop Camden Council wrecking our borough?

Following last week’s pleas in the CNJ from those affected by the council’s plans for Somers Town, the planning committee on June 4 did not decide to do the right thing, that is, stop the developer from adding yet more flats to the Somers Town tower.

The outcome of the meeting is not surprising: a third of committee members know little about planning, and just vote as whipped; a third are career politicians who want to put Camden on their CVs and do not appear to care about the actual outcome; and the remaining third are mainly from opposition parties, unfortunately unable to stop the madness.

This scheme results in a tragic loss of green space. The design of the residential tower is deeply flawed and an insult to the residents of Somers Town.

Glass buildings are a no-no when designing for future climate change. These flats will be like ovens for their future residents, not to mention the fact it has only one staircase, which is a fire safety risk.

The so-called community benefits of the overall scheme are not worth it. The new Edith Neville school is an overly complicated building that will probably only last a few years.

The school would have been better off staying in their previous building, the scale and setting of which was suitable for a primary.

Councillors should be representing our interests.
