The only progressive alternative for Camden is Labour
Friday, 14th May 2021
• WHILE many of the May 6 results were disappointing for Labour, bright spots included seizing the West of England and Cambridgeshire and Peterborough mayoralties from the Conservatives, as well as Tory fall-back in Kent, Sussex, and Oxfordshire.
Even in unexpected places, like Worthing, Labour made gains. In London Sadiq Khan won convincingly, in the face of racism and lies.
Here in Camden, the Barnet & Camden London Assembly seat remains Labour, too, after Anne Clarke fought off a challenge from the Tories. Barnet and Camden was formerly a Tory seat which I know local Labour activists have worked hard to defend.
Not long ago at all, the Mayor of London was none other than Boris Johnson. Even in Camden, all those who oppose the Tories cannot be complacent.
They are the main opposition party on the council and will be looking to expand from their base in Hampstead outward to Highgate, West Hampstead, and Primrose Hill.
As we start to look ahead to next year’s council elections, I would urge CNJ readers to recall the investment made in the borough over recent years – from repairing our schools after the coalition government cut the Building Schools for the Future programme; to buying back council flats; to cleaning up our air.
The only progressive alternative for Camden is Labour.
