HE is a broadcaster who has been all around the world filming his weird and wacky documentaries, so perhaps Louis Theroux had a bit of a headstart when he pulled up a stool for a pub quiz in Kilburn last week.

The film-maker surprised regulars at the Sir Colin Campbell bar in Kilburn High Road when he joined an impossible-to-beat team for the weekly Wednesday general knowledge challenge.

Gav Strang, manager of the Sir Colin Campbell in Kilburn High Road, told the New Journal he had no idea Mr Theroux would be attending and was “very surprised” to see him sitting down and ready for the questions when he walked down the stairs last Wednesday.

“I came down and Louis was talking to my partner Becca who didn’t know who he was. He was just asking when the quiz started, that kind of thing,” Mr Strang. “I kind of did my very best not to make a big deal out of it, you just want to let him have a quiet night out. I have been doing pub quizzes for a very long time, you don’t often have celebrities there.”

Other pub-goers also left the famous face to his night of quizzing, he said.

Mr Strang added: “I’m a Louis fan. He’s like a tier two national treasure – I mean that in the most polite way. What he did with the Weird Weekends [documentary]… he’s difficult not to like. I watch his stuff as much as the next person I suppose. He’s made quite a name for himself.”

Given Mr Theroux’s eclectic knowledge, it may come as no surprise that his team took home the cash prize – but only by a small margin.

Mr Strang said: “I don’t know whether they were holding back or if it was all legitimate but they came first with 44 points. I think second place got 41 points. It was pretty close. There were five teams competing.

“We start with a music round. I always start with the ‘name that tune’ and there’s a table round, which would be a picture round or anagrams, and then a general knowledge round.”

The documentary-maker’s friend, Andy, then tried to answer the jackpot rollover question, which last week was “name any member of Mis-Teeq, not called Sabrina Washington or Alesha Dixon”. “He didn’t win it,” Mr Strang said.

It’s Su-Elise, of course.

The pub manager joined the Sir Colin Campbell six months ago, and the space has a special place in his heart.

He said: “I grew up in Kilburn then moved away for 25 years so it’s been a bit of a homecoming. This pub is literally a long stone’s throw away from my old Cub Scout group.

“Our little corner still has a strong traditional Irish feel. It’s a family pub with mostly really nice lovely regulars and I’ve been blessed to make a lot of really lovely friends since I’ve been back. It was a bit daunting to come back and leave somewhere I’ve put roots down. It was daunting but I’ve met my friends for life.”

The Sir Colin Campbell pub quiz takes place every Wednesday at 8pm.
