The name of St Pancras should not be removed from the constituency map

Thursday, 24th June 2021

• THE review of parliamentary boundaries has resulted in parts of Camden being in three proposed new constituencies (Camden Town & St John’s Wood, Kentish Town & Bloomsbury and West Hampstead & Kilburn) but none of those proposed new constituencies lies wholly within the borough of Camden, (Camden’s parliamentary constituencies to be carved up by boundary changes, June 8).

Moreover the historic names of the former boroughs of Hampstead, Holborn & St Pancras, which were amalgamated to create Camden in 1965 are to be lost altogether.

Constituencies bearing the names of Holborn & St Pancras have been in continuous existence since 1885 and there is no good reason why the proposed new constituency of Kentish Town & Bloomsbury should not continue to be named Holborn & St Pancras since it contains the whole of the former borough of Holborn and more than two-thirds of the former borough of St Pancras including St Pancras Old Church and St Pancras station.

St Pancras is one of the most historic communities in London dating back to the Roman occupation and, in my opinion, it should not be erased from the constituency map.

Any readers wishing to comment on the Boundary Commission proposals may do so online via the consultation portal at www.bcereviews.org.uk and the closing date for initial submissions is August 2 2021.
