• LADIES loos yet again!

Following much anger from the general public over the mixed-sex loos arrangement in Camden Town, the CNJ ran a story earlier this year with a report of council workers putting the women’s toilets back in action.

Reinstating the Ladies loos would not have happened without the efforts of the CNJ and the campaigning of Cllr Richard Cotton, who raised this issue on behalf of residents with the powers that be in Camden Council.

It was relief too that the legacy of George Bernard Shaw, who championed the right of women to have this public toilet, was not lost after all.

Roll on just a few months and the Ladies have been shut yet again. No notice on the gates but instead women in need of a loo are met with large chains and padlocks.

It has been publicised that the Men’s toilets were closed for maintenance, they too are locked with an explanation and a map of other loos nearby. Ladies are not provided with such similar courtesies.

Surely the Labour Camden councillors would not have been so cynical to have reinstated the Ladies loos, just days before the May local elections, to then close them again?
