The incinerator would seem to offer solutions to our waste dilemma

• I NORMALLY support the aims and principles of the Green Party but I disagree with them on the subject of the new Edmonton incinerator and support Miles Seaman, (The Edmonton ERF is sound approach to deal with waste that can’t be recycled, February 3).
It is very naive to think recycling is the total answer as there is no way a council can compel residents to recycle everything practical and even so there would still be non-recyclable waste left over and they don’t provide a solution for that.
The shambles reported by the Veolia operatives that, through insufficient capacity on their lorries, general and recycling waste, or food waste, has to be mixed up to be able to remove all that is left for collection, shows the dire situation.
Even if everything worked perfectly there is still going to be much non-recyclable waste left over and the Greens and others who object to the incinerator have failed to provide a solution for that apart from either using landfill or sending it abroad for disposal where it would probably be burnt anyway.
As Miles Seaman points out, apart from the much reduced and filtered emissions from the new plant, recycling facilities will also be available there and a benefit is the production of electricity from the burning of waste.
I was originally against the new plant due to emission problems, but with the latest technical information and the added benefits I can see no alternative but landfill.
A recent report states that we send 300,000 tonnes of clothing a year to landfill, so effective and technically acceptable solutions are urgently needed and the incinerator would seem to provide this, at least for the boroughs involved.
