The HS2 HGVs are coming, give us traffic marshals

Thursday, 21st June 2018

• SOON the roar of HS2 HGV heavy goods vehicles will thunder along our streets. There will be hundreds from the compound in Hampstead Road, hundreds along Eversholt Street, hundreds along Stanhope Street.

Robert Street, as an example, will have trucks every three to five minutes, 200 a day, Regent’s Park estate will be worst hit. These are the roads our children will be using to get to school.

It sickens me to think that the kids will have to run this gauntlet of death, for that is what it is. Only a little while ago a young woman was killed by a HGV while crossing Hampstead Road, and this was at a traffic-light controlled pedestrian crossing.

So what chance do the kiddies have if an adult can go under the wheels of truck? What can be done? This is quite simple. Traffic marshals should be placed at all points the children will have cross.

I can see that HS2 will balk at the cost to them of protecting the school-children, but with all the billions of pounds that they are spending… what cost the life of a child?
