The hospital and the council must act to make the South End Green area safer

Thursday, 29th March 2018

• I COULDN’T agree more with Jeff Gold on the dangerous traffic situation in the South End Green area and the total disregard that both the Royal Free and council display about the perils posed to pedestrians trying to cross the roads, (Pedestrians are in danger now that building work has started at the Royal Free Hospital, March 22).

There is appalling traffic congestion in the South End Green area, where four busy major roads converge, two bus termini, a railway station, a crowded shopping street, hordes of visitors going to Hampstead Heath at weekends.

It’s a recipe for disaster. Emergency vehicles on blue lights frequently tear through all this en route to A&E.

We have illegally high levels of air and noise pollution and pavement cyclists, who have become a scourge because they are of the opinion that they somehow have the right to ride on the pavements.

To exit a house on Constantine Road, one now has to ensure that one looks both ways to avoid a collision with a cyclist. Sadly, there have been accidents and nothing has been done by either the council or the hospital authorities.

There is far too much going on in the South End Green area and accidents will continue to happen unless drastic measures are put in place to reconfigure the conditions there.
