Julian Assange

• IN your Comment on Julian Assange and his arrest as a threat to press freedom, you write, “He has published damning material that has exposed wrongdoings by various governments,” (Don’t lose sight of press freedom in case against Assange, April 18).

Not among those governments, strangely, is that of Vladimir Putin, in Russia, about whom Assange has never said a peep let alone anything negative.

Even US attorney general William Barr, a Donald Trump defender, noted in his press conference of April 18 that the GRU (Russia’s military intelligence division) provided Wikileaks with hacked material.

Strange, then, that such a robust defender of press freedom and information transparency would find himself in alliance with the Putin regime, not exactly noted for its commitment to either.
