The Green Party has let us down

• JUST when we need it most the Green Party has lost the plot, and my sometime vote.

As MP for Brighton, Pavilion Caroline Lucas, the tireless Green activist with practical, doable, proposals to help save the nation’s land, air and water from pollution, struggled to maintain her campaigning and announced she was standing down.

You felt for her. Greens have to do “popular” things like campaign for more house-building, which is hardly green.

Now we learn of unethical Green Party tactics as the electable Siân Berry resigned as a Camden councillor to “spend time in Brighton”. The trouble is, Berry was just elected to the London Assembly.

Diehard Londoners traipsed to the voting stations, many with their ID cards, to elect her. What voters did not do is vote for the Green Party’s mayoral candidate, Zoë Garbett.

But the party has made a mockery of the London electorate and the democratic system on May 2. Right after being elected to the assembly, Berry decided to “elect” Garbett to the assembly in her place.

Voters often vote for individuals, not parties, so nepotism of this kind has no place in our democracy.
