• STEPHEN Crosher makes it clear that the Lib Dems are trying to get pro-Remain sentiment to translate into votes for themselves, as the most committed pro-European Union party, in the elections next month, (The party of Remain, April 12).

I believe this is utterly wrong. I am an irreconcilable Remainer. The best imaginable Brexit deal, let alone the best achievable, would still not be acceptable.

Only continued British full membership of the EU will do. To put it crudely, in the world of Trump, Putin and Xi, we need to be in a big gang. It doesn’t matter whether we “like” the EU or not, it’s the only gang available to us.

I believe that Brexit can still be stopped, but to do that we need to get significant numbers who voted Leave in 2016 to change their minds. That’s where the Lib Dems don’t come in. Nobody who even considered voting Leave would take the slightest notice of anything the Lib Dems say.

I believe the Remain campaign lost votes from the prominence of the Lib Dems, whose unconditional devotion to the EU puts more pragmatic Remainers off. The most helpful thing the Lib Dems can do in the Brexit crisis is to shut up.
