Royal Free Hospital

• THIS crisis has shone a light on the kindness, dedication and bravery of NHS staff.

We know they work tirelessly to keep us safe, but it is something else to see their efforts on the front line of the fight against coronavirus up close.

Anyone who tuned in to the BBC Hospital: Coronavirus Special will have got an insight into the heroic efforts of staff at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead.

It was a very moving documentary, which showed our local health workers doing the most amazing work in the most difficult circumstances.

If you didn’t catch the programme live, you won’t regret watching it on iPlayer.

I cannot imagine what it is like to have to break the news to families of patients that their loved one is going to die.

To see doctors having to do this over the phone because of the restrictions in place to stop the spread of Covid-19 was heart-breaking.

The physical and emotional toll of the job they are doing must be immense, and I do not know how they manage to get through it.

I’ll be thinking of the every day heroes at the Royal Free when I’m clapping for carers tonight and all those putting their lives on the line to keep us safe.
