The council’s fire safety efforts are a failure

• THE council’s “first priority” goes up in smoke, (Thousands at risk from fire in Camden’s council homes).

Camden’s big talk about fire safety turned out to be nothing more than a smokescreen.

Thousands of their council homes are now fire safety risks, and the government’s housing regulator is not amused.

The Regulator of Social Housing pulled no punches, calling out the council for failing to complete fire safety actions on time and putting tenants at risk.

But hold on. Council leader Labour councillor Georgia Gould claims fire safety was her “first priority” six years ago.

Really Cllr Gould? With thousands of overdue fire safety actions, it seems more like it was your last priority!

But fear not, residents, Cllr Gould won’t rest until all housing meets standards. Except for the thousands of unsafe homes still waiting for improvements, of course.

Camden boasts about investing more than £200million in safety improvements, but with so many fire safety actions neglected, it makes us wonder where that money actually went.

Cllr Gould, blaming the government’s underinvestment, seems to forget that actions speak louder than words.

If only Camden had invested in delivering safe homes instead of empty promises. So Camden Council’s fire safety efforts are nothing but a failure.
