The council seems hell-bent on a campaign against private cars

• CONSERVATIVES last year supported residents in their battle to stop Camden Council from shutting off Elsworthy Road and King Henry’s Road to through-traffic.
Ostensibly to improve safety and air-quality, this misguided measure was set to actually increase traffic volumes, so therefore pollution and overloading, on the already densely trafficked Adelaide Road.
After public outcry, this measure was dropped and common sense led to a road-width scheme which achieves a safer neighbourhood without punishing residents.
Now the council is proposing to do exactly the same thing – but for certain hours only – in the stated pursuit of school safety.
Given that the head of the school concerned, St Paul’s, has clearly set out the case that this would in fact endanger pupils and create hardships for staff, it would seem evident that the administration is yet again hell-bent on its campaign against the private car without concern for the downsides.
