The Chetwynd Road lobby does not speak for me
Thursday, 23rd September 2021
• I AM a long-term resident of Dartmouth Park and I wanted to point out that the recent direct deputation made to Camden Council that was mentioned in your report (Anti-traffic measures set for trial in 2022, September 16) was not made on behalf of the residents of Dartmouth Park, as Steve King who led the appeal claims; he made no prior attempt to consult residents or to involve the Dartmouth Park Neighbourhood Forum in this appeal to Camden.
Steve King is in fact representing the Chetwynd Road lobby group, who are a highly organised and very vocal group that want to restrict traffic in Chetwynd Road, the only obvious direct east-west route from Gordon House Road to Dartmouth Park Hill via a safe traffic light controlled junction.
This would have the exact opposite effect of creating a LTN low traffic neighbourhood by sending that east-west traffic through the heart of the conservation area instead – Dartmouth Park Road, Laurier Road, Croftdown Road, Boscastle Road, Woodsome Road etc and maybe also up Swains Lane. Drivers would simply switch on Waze and find another less direct and safe way through.
The Chetwynd Road lobby would not mind if this happened as they frequently say, and so did Steve King in his speech to Camden, that “their” traffic should be more fairly distributed around the conservation area because the current situation disadvantages them in favour of others.
I respect the right of the Chetwynd Road lobby to make that argument, as they frequently do, in many and various ways, but it is a red line for me when they purport to represent the residents of Dartmouth Park and also use a completely out of context statistic to claim 81 per cent of residents support their cause. Not true and it was underhand to use that tactic with Camden.
Luckily Cllr Adam Harrison expressed a commitment to full consultation and also called out the exaggerated air pollution statistics used by the lobby group in his response to the deputation.
Hopefully local democracy will ensure that the loudest voices do not win the day over the less noisy majority.
