The Camden budget debate was instructive
Thursday, 4th March 2021
• WATCHING the Camden Council budget debate this week provided me with quite an education.
Our local council faces further deep cuts of £30million from central government. This comes on top of all the lost revenue because of Covid-19.
Yet local Conservative councillors seemed to think this was A-OK, not once suggesting that national government may need to step in with financial compensation.
On making our borough greener, the Tories did propose cycling lessons for young people, yet went on to oppose creating extra space on our streets where people can actually ride safely. Am I missing something here?
Perhaps most laughably, the Conservatives here in Camden expressed concern over the closure of police stations across the borough, seemingly forgetting that it was dear old Boris Johnson – as Mayor of London – who closed so many of our police stations in the first place.
On the other hand, Labour voices put forward sensible, practical and positive solutions for managing the local finances, for transforming our borough into a clean and green place to live, and for making our borough safer.
The Tories are Camden’s second-largest party. I think we all know what to do at the ballot box next year.
