The borough has many empty garages, it’s a waste

• THE back story about the report (Radio station could move into derelict Gospel Oak garages, July 11) is that there are hundreds (450 according to a council survey five years ago) of empty garages in Haverstock-Gospel Oak area alone which could be providing much-needed revenue for Camden Council and the Housing Revenue Account.

The ones (about 80 I think) referred to in your report have been empty for well over 42 years. Current rents are, I understand, £10 per week for tenants and leaseholders and £30 for others. Perhaps somebody will do the maths of the many millions lost.

There was a failed attempt in 2014 to get the derelict garages around Queen’s Crescent Market to be made available for market stallholders for storage. Even though there is now less of a demand, recent attempts to get some into use have also failed.

The council continually uses the excuse of government cuts for its lack of services. Yet here is a valuable asset which over many decades has remained woefully underused.

Perhaps a councillor could tell us just how much revenue is currently being lost, explain why and say what is to be done to change things.
