The affordable housing crisis has reached a critical level
Friday, 15th November 2019
• SUCCESSIVE governments have failed to deal with the dire need for social and genuinely “affordable” housing. This need has now reached a critical level. Whichever party forms a government after the upcoming election must make housing a priority.
It is high time that cynical legislation of the Thatcher years, which not only encouraged the “right to buy” but simultaneously forbade councils from reinvesting the proceeds in new social housing, be overturned.
Furthermore there must be a genuine endeavour to build more social housing. This is particularly relevant in Kentish town, with regard to the proposed redevelopment of Regis Road and Murphy’s Yard.
