TfL’s failures on noise and pollution
• TRANSPORT for London last year stopped traffic from being able to turn left from Camden Street onto Camden Road in favour of a new pedestrian crossing and bicycle lane, as discussed in your Letters pages, (Rat-running on the way, February 6 2020 and Why is TfL not listening? February 20 2020).
While I agree that this change was necessary, what I do not agree with is TfL’s insufficient investigations into the knock-on effects on subsequent streets, which have shown that previous fears were entirely justified.
In a Freedom of Information request TfL admitted that it had not monitored noise and pollution since this change; and that traffic had now more than doubled on Georgiana Street (from 389 before implementation to 887 afterwards, between 7am and 7pm).
Even though Sarah Gill, investigator at the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman, believes that this exponential increase in traffic and lack of noise / pollution monitoring is perfectly sufficient, I do not believe that TfL has taken this matter seriously.
Furthermore I am certain that it has not looked at ways in which to lessen the impact on Georgiana Street, Pratt Street, Lyme Street and Royal College Street.
